This 19th century hand carved stone lamp niche comes from Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, a region renowned for its distinctive golden sandstone and exceptional architectural craftsmanship. Designed with three small arched recesses, the niche would originally have been built into the wall beside a doorway where oil lamps or small candles were placed to illuminate the entrance and welcome guests.
The warm yellow sandstone, often referred to as Jaisalmer stone, is highly prized for its durability and beautiful colour, which glows softly in natural light. The front is richly decorated with Mughal-inspired carvings of foliage, birds and geometric motifs, reflecting the refined architectural detailing found throughout the desert city’s historic havelis and temples.
