Lattice Kitchen Cabinet From Shanghai - 19th Century

Lattice Kitchen Cabinet From Shanghai - 19th Century

This superb antique Chinese kitchen cabinet dates from the 19th century, Qing dynasty (1644 €“ 1911). As the name suggests was used in the kitchen for drying noodles and storing food. This style of kitchen cabinet's defining characteristic is latticework on the doors which allows for airflow in and out of the cabinet and gives them a completely unique look.

This example is from Shanghai and constructed from elm and pine wood. Shanghai & Suzhou are generally considered to have created the best quality Chinese traditional furniture. The origin of this piece can be discerned by the style of the lower brackets which is typically found on furniture from Jiangsu province.

Originally, this cabinet would have been lacquered with a burgundy lacquer and whilst much of this has worn away, remnants can be seen on the interior. This piece is a lovely and unusual example of a traditional Chinese kitchen cabinet.
