Bikaner Painted Window Shutters – 19th Century

Bikaner Painted Window Shutters – 19th Century

These richly painted antique window shutters come from Bikaner, Rajasthan, a historic desert city renowned for its beautifully decorated havelis (merchant houses) and distinctive painted interiors. The six recessed panels are hand painted with stylised floral motifs in warm shades of red, ochre and black, their softly worn surface bearing the character and patina of more than a century of use.

Originally part of a traditional Rajasthani home, these shutters would have provided both privacy and ventilation while adding colour and decoration to the building's façade. The painted floral medallions are inspired by Mughal decorative arts, reflecting the artistic influence that spread throughout Rajasthan during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Now fitted with wall hangers, these shutters make a striking piece of architectural wall art. Whether displayed in a hallway, living room or above a fireplace, they bring warmth, history and authentic craftsmanship to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
