Blue Painted Tribal Door From Orissa - 19th Century

Blue Painted Tribal Door From Orissa - 19th Century

This striking 19th century tribal door from Orissa is richly layered with history, texture and folk symbolism. Retaining traces of its original blue painted surface, the door reveals an extraordinary series of deeply carved panels beneath, each depicting tribal figures, birds, monkeys, tigers and other animals in a naïve yet highly decorative style. The weathered paint and worn timber give the piece remarkable depth and character, making it as much a work of art as an architectural fragment.

Constructed from solid hardwood, the door is framed by hand-carved borders and a grid of raised supports that create a rhythmic arrangement of individual relief carvings across the surface. Each panel has been carved by hand, giving every section subtle variation and individuality. The surviving blue pigment contrasts beautifully against the aged wood beneath, enhancing the sculptural quality of the carvings and lending the piece a bold, almost contemporary appearance despite its age.

Architectural panels and doors of this type were traditionally used in tribal and rural homes throughout Orissa, where carved imagery often carried symbolic or protective meanings connected to local beliefs and storytelling traditions. Today, this example makes a remarkable decorative statement piece, ideal as wall art or as a dramatic focal point within both traditional and contemporary interiors.

The door is supplied ready for display with wall hangers already attached.
