Brass Bound 'Pithara' Console Chest From Gujarat - 19th Century

Brass Bound 'Pithara' Console Chest From Gujarat - 19th Century

This antique Indian dowry chest is constructed from teak bound with brass. It dates to the 19th century and is from Gujarat. This style of chest is known locally as a pithara (or pataro) and is usually 2.5x deeper. These chests are reduced in depth to create dramatic console tables. We fell in love with the hand beaten peacocks and tigers that decorate the front of this chest.

This style of pithara is from a Kathi home in Saurashtra and was known in the local dialect as a pataro. The Kathi were a ruling caste in Saurashtra and these chests would have contained a grand dowry. It is perfect for the storage of bedding for occasional guests.

Chests and boxes from India are found in an extraordinary variety of styles reflecting the many cultures that influenced India.
