Cedar Chinese Altar Table From Hebei - 19thC

Cedar Chinese Altar Table From Hebei - 19thC

This antique Chinese altar table with everted flanges is made from Cedar wood and dates from the mid 19th century.

The yuntou 'cloud head' motif at the top of the legs has been used since the 13th century and symbolises good fortune. The everted flanges (upturned ends) stopped scrolls from rolling off the table. The symbol on the legs is a ruyi, another symbol of good fortune and longevity.

Altar tables were used for ancestor worship in China. Usually a family ancestor portrait would be hung above the table & joss sticks lit & placed on the table for the well being of the household. They were always long & narrow in form - a configuration seldom found in antique European furniture.

Cedar wood was less commonly used and these tables are usually found in Red Elm, Walnut or Rosewood.

This elegant table is ideal for use as a console table in a narrow hallway or as a lamp table behind a sofa.
