Chinese Spring Bench From Shanxi Province - 19thC
This elegant late 19th century Chinese spring bench originates from Shanxi Province in Northern China. Traditionally placed outside shops, tea houses and small restaurants, these long benches provided a welcoming place for staff, customers and passers-by to rest, converse and enjoy the fresh air.
Crafted from solid elm, this particularly long example has spent much of its life exposed to the elements, leaving it with a beautifully sun-bleached finish that highlights the striking natural grain of the timber. The thick, single-plank seat has developed a wonderfully textured surface over more than a century, while the simple Ming style brackets beneath the top add a restrained decorative detail typical of Northern Chinese furniture.
Its understated design and soft, weathered tones allow it to sit effortlessly within both contemporary and traditional interiors. Whether placed alongside a long dining table, beneath a window or in a spacious hallway, this bench brings authentic history, warmth and character to any setting.
