It is made from painted teak wood in the Anglo-Indian style and likely would have belonged to a merchant or East Indiaman. 
The original brass bindings are typical of the campaign style introduced by the British East India Company.

Unusually, this chest opens from the front and has a hidden compartment in the interior.
