Indian Green Painted Wheeled Chest – 18th Century

Indian Green Painted Wheeled Chest – 18th Century

This 18th century rosewood chest from Gujarat was built to withstand constant travel and heavy loads. Painted a mottled green-blue and on old wheels, it is clad with iron strapping, hand-forged lock plates and has developed a beautiful, naturally aged patina over centuries of use. It is constructed from solid rosewood.

These chests were used to carry valuable household possessions or trade goods. The simple forged side handles made it easier to manoeuvre, while the decorative hand-cut lock plate reflects the craftsmanship lavished on even practical objects during the period.

Inside, the chest offers generous storage beneath its original hinged lid, complete with a chain support and robust iron hinges. Every surface tells the story of its working life, with layers of paint worn smooth through handling and use. Today it makes an exceptional coffee table, blanket chest or statement storage piece, bringing authentic 18th century Indian character to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
