Japanese Mizuya Dansu - Meiji Period (Ca 1900)
This magnificent Japanese mizuya dansu (kitchen chest) dates from the Meiji period (circa 1900) and is an unusual example with persimmon arrow inserts and drawer fronts (persimmon is rarely used on larger tansu). Mizuya dansu were central to Japanese households, used for the storage of food, crockery, and utensils, and this piece beautifully reflects that heritage with its 17 drawers, three compartments hidden behind sliding doors, and a variety of practical storage spaces.
The chest was constructed by a master woodworker. Both persimmon and burr keyaki often warp and require a skilled craftsman to manipulate them. Persimmon and red elm are both premium woods suggesting a wealthy original owner. This Mizuya dansu is crafted from a combination of woods, the frame is made of durable hinoki (Japanese cypress), drawer fronts of richly toned persimmon, the carcass of sugi (Japanese cedar), and the sliding door panels of burr keyaki (zelkova / red elm). The cabinet is constructed in two stacking sections, making it easier to transport and assemble €” a feature often seen in Japanese tansu.
The drawer handles are warabite (bracken) shaped and constructed from anodized copper and with copper wire blending function with elegant decorative detail.
