Lacquered Bronze Thai Sitting Buddha - Early 19th Century

Lacquered Bronze Thai Sitting Buddha - Early 19th Century

This large antique Thai sitting Buddha dates to the early 19th century and likely from the reign of King Rama III (1824 - 1851). This figure is Phra Sri Ariya Metrai, known as The Future Buddha. It should be noted that this Buddha is never depicted with a ushnisha

Buddha sits cross legged with a serene expression and meditative downcast eyes with his hands in dhyana mudra, the palms of both his hands resting on lap, facing upwards. The fingers form a triangle shape, representing Triratna's spiritual fire.

This Buddha is finely constructed from cast and carved bronze with gilding (gold plating) over black lacquer undercoats. The core is of the period. It is sandy and unstructured. The difference of colours is due to differing rates of oxygination.

Condition & Provenance:

Although the lacquer is heavy and thick there are losses across the surface. We have consolidated the lacquer in the workshop to avoid any further losses. The gilding is stable. Purchased from the UK art market.
