Evocative and finely crafted, this Bastar toran dates to the mid 20th century and is a striking example of tribal ironwork from central India. Traditionally made as decorative and talismanic objects, torans were believed to bring protection and auspiciousness to the home. This example retains that ceremonial presence, with a strong vertical format that can be displayed either wall-mounted or leaning against a wall as a sculptural screen.

Formed as a rhythmic grid of horizontal bands, the composition is populated with a lively procession of stylised human figures and animals drawn from the natural world, each rendered in an elegantly minimal silhouette characteristic of Bastar metalwork. The repetition creates a strong visual cadence, while subtle variations in pose introduce movement and narrative interest across the surface.

Suspended from the lower edges are small iron pendants that add texture and gentle movement, occasionally producing a soft sound when disturbed.
