Bronze "Urli" Cauldron From South India - Late 19thC

Bronze Urli from South India - Late 19thC - Urlis were used as cauldrons for food preparation in South India. They were placed directly on the fire and wooden poles were inserted through the loop handles at each side to carry them. They were traditionally made in Kerala from bronze, or bell metal using the lost wax process - Cire Perdue. Each mould is destroyed during the casting process.
