This rare 19th-century lacquered turban box originates from Sindh, a region celebrated for its highly skilled lacquer-turning traditions. Crafted from turned wood and decorated using traditional lac application techniques, the box represents one of the finest forms of domestic craftsmanship produced in the region during the 19th century. Such containers were used to store and protect valuable textiles, including ceremonial turbans, and were prized both for their practical purpose and decorative appeal.

The box is richly decorated with vibrant red, black, and ochre lacquer work applied while the vessel rotated on a hand-powered lathe. Skilled artisans pressed coloured sticks of lac against the revolving wood, allowing friction-generated heat to soften the material and create a smooth, durable finish. Intricate floral and foliate motifs have then been enhanced through incised decoration, revealing contrasting colours beneath the surface and creating remarkable visual depth. The conical lid is crowned with a simple turned finial and displays a beautifully preserved pattern band that wraps around its circumference.

During the 19th century, international exhibitions helped bring global recognition to the lacquerware traditions of Sindh, with the region becoming particularly renowned for the quality of its lac-turned wares.
