Pair of Chinese Wedding Baskets From South China - ca 1920

Pair of Chinese Wedding Baskets From South China - ca 1920

This pair of antique Chinese wedding baskets date to the early 20th century - circa 1920. They are constructed from lacquered wood (probably Chinese swamp wood which is now extinct) and woven bamboo. These baskets were traditionally filled with dried fruit, sweets & nuts and presented to the bride & groom at the wedding ceremony. Every painting has meaning and each panel has wonderfully detailed hand painted depictions of animals, birds & figures. They feature the auspicious '100 boys' motif thought in China to bring good fortune. Camels, grazing horses & deer are also depicted. There are symbols of longevity, strength and good luck. Some of the painting has worn from years of regular use.

The bamboo used is a wonderful metaphor for marriage as it bends and becomes flexible whilst not breaking. These would make a truly unique gift or wedding gift.
