Red & Black Lacquer Sideboard From Shanxi - Late 18thC

Red & Black Lacquer Sideboard From Shanxi - Late 18thC

This Qing dynasty (1644 - 1912) black & red lacquer Shanxi sideboard dates to the late 18th century. This design was classic of the Ming & Qing dynasties and the doors would have originally have been gilt with scenes of everyday life or precious objects. Some remnants of the gilt work still remain.

Much of this painting has worn away, but there is still the original brass hardware. Much antique brass and iron hardware from furniture was robbed and melted down during Chairman Mao€™s cultural revolution.

This style of sideboard was a staple in Shanxi province and would have been used as altar cabinets, for burning incense and making offerings to the ancestors. An ancestor painting would often be hung above.
