Stone Elephant With Riders From Kutch - 18th Century

Stone Elephant With Riders From Kutch - 18th Century

These striking antique carved stone elephants are traditional architectural figures from India, originally created to adorn the entranceways of temples or grand havelis. Each depicts a richly caparisoned elephant carrying a mahout (rider) and a royal box upon its back — symbols of power, ceremony, and protection.

Hand-carved from stone and painted in soft hues of yellow, turquoise, and terracotta, the remaining pigments have gently weathered over time, giving each figure a wonderful patina and sense of age. The sculpted detailing — from the turbaned mahout to the draped harness and tasselled ornaments — showcases the artistry of 19th-century Indian craftsmen.

These sturdy, beautifully carved pieces can be displayed as individual sculptures or as a striking pair. Sold separately.
