Vintage Indian Stone Masala Bowls - 1920
Hand-carved from a single piece of hard stone, these traditional Indian masala bowls were once an essential part of the kitchen, used to hold freshly ground spices during food preparation. Their simple, practical form reflects generations of everyday use, while the beautifully worn surface and rich patina tell the story of decades spent at the heart of the home.
The twin bowls allowed different spices or ingredients to be kept close at hand while cooking, making them both functional and efficient. Traces of pigment and spice residue remain visible within the bowls, adding to their authenticity and offering a tangible connection to their original purpose. The stone has developed a wonderfully tactile, naturally aged surface that can only be achieved through years of handling and use.
Today these charming utilitarian objects make beautiful decorative pieces, equally suited as salt and pepper cellars, serving bowls for dips or condiments, candle holders, or simply as sculptural objects celebrating the beauty of honest craftsmanship and everyday design.
