Walnut Farmhouse Coffee Table – Circa 1910
This handsome rustic farmhouse table was originally used for everyday family meals. Crafted in Henan Province in Northern China circa 1910, its low proportions reflect the traditional style of dining in rural China, where families gathered around low tables whilst seated on stools or benches, making it a central part of daily family life.
Constructed from richly grained walnut, the table has developed a warm, mellow patina through generations of use. The thick plank top displays beautiful natural figuring alongside the honest wear expected of a piece that has served a hardworking household for over a century. Traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery and subtly shaped corner brackets demonstrate the quality of its original craftsmanship, while the robust construction ensures it remains as functional today as when it was first made.
Its generous proportions make it an ideal coffee table, bringing warmth, texture and understated elegance to both contemporary and traditional interiors. Beautifully aged and full of character, it is an enduring example of Chinese provincial furniture.
