This exceptional Kasane Isho Dansu chest from the Edo period (1603 - 1868) is a refined example of traditional Japanese cabinetry, combining practicality with understated elegance. Crafted using time-honoured methods, it would have been the work of two skilled artisans—a carpenter responsible for the timber construction and an ironworker who forged the beautifully detailed hardware. The warm, richly grained red elm drawer fronts contrast beautifully with the dark iron fittings, creating a striking yet balanced aesthetic that has only deepened with age.

Designed for the storage of valuable garments, kasane dansu were essential pieces in Japanese homes, often used seasonally to separate winter and summer clothing. This example retains its original functionality and charm, featuring multiple drawers alongside a hinged compartment that conceals additional smaller drawers—an ingenious solution for organising treasured textiles. The side carrying handles reflect its practical design, allowing it to be moved and stored when not in use.
