Brass & Lacquered Chest From Bikaner - Early 19th Century

Brass & Lacquered Chest From Bikaner - Early 19th Century

This rare antique Indian chest is from Bikaner in Rajasthan. It dates to the early 19th century (or earlier). Beautifully constructed with a double hasp and green & red lacquer work, this would have been made for a wealthy client and features a mix of brass and iron hardware.

Bikaner is unique to Rajasthan that it had access to cedar wood from the himalayas. The base of this chest and the candle box are constructed from cedar wood. The main body of this chest is a hardwood, perhaps roheda or another desert tree. Its frame features a rich red color, perfectly complementing the dark green and brown panels. The top displays a gorgeous patina and remnants of old green paint, while its beautifully turned feet elevate it off the ground.

Originating from the early 19th century, this exquisite chest has been traditionally used to house valuable items such as a family dowry. Its reliable lift is ensured by wrought iron handles, making it ideal for carrying a full load.

A fitted candle box inside could double as a trinket box and a sturdy chain prevents the lid from falling open.
