Chip Carved Merchant Box From Jaisalmer - 19th Century
This beautifully hand carved 19th century merchant's box originates from Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, a historic trading city that sat at the crossroads of the ancient caravan routes linking India with Central Asia and beyond. Boxes such as this were traditionally used by merchants and traders in bustling bazaars to store cash, account books and valuable documents, while they also played an important role in family life as dowry chests, carrying a young bride's treasured possessions to her new home.
Crafted from roheda wood, the exterior is richly decorated with intricate chip carving, featuring repeating padma (stylistic lotus designs) with geometric borders. Interestingly, the carving bears a striking resemblance to traditional European chip carving, a similarity often attributed to centuries of cultural exchange along the great trading routes that connected East and West. Iron strengthening straps, decorative feet and a warm, richly developed patina complete this wonderfully characterful piece.
Today, this versatile box is as practical as it is beautiful. Ideal for storing keepsakes, jewellery, knitting, remote controls or other household items, it brings both history and craftsmanship into the modern home.
